Guide to server monitoring licenses

In this help document, you will learn how IT infrastructure monitors are licensed. There are three types of licensing entities:

  • Host monitor
  • Basic monitor
  • Advanced monitor

Agent based server and VM monitoring

Each server or VM monitor consumes one host monitor license.

What can you monitor with each server/VM monitor?

With each host license monitor, in addition to more than 80 health and performance metrics, you can have these following child monitors:

    25 CPU cores

    25 disk partitions

    25 network interfaces

25 resource checks (like file monitoring, Event Log monitoring, and more)

25 services or processes in the professional plan (50 services or processes if you have opted for the enterprise plan)

500 StatsD metrics without alert capabilities.

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Active Directory monitoring

Each Active Directory server monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

Microsoft Exchange server monitoring

Each Microsoft Exchange server monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

Windows Updates monitoring

Each Windows Updates monitor consumes one basic monitor license.

Windows Failover Clusters monitoring

Each Failover Cluster monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Windows Failover Cluster monitor?

With each Failover Cluster monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Resource groups
  • Resource type stats
  • Networks
  • Cluster Nodes
  • Cluster Disk

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

IIS Server monitoring

Each IIS server monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each IIS server monitor?

With each IIS server monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Sites
  • Applications
  • Application pools

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Sharepoint server monitoring

Each Sharepoint server monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Sharepoint server monitor?

With each Sharepoint server monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Service instances
  • Web applications
  • Content databases

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Hyper-V monitoring

Each Hyper-V monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Hyper-V monitor?

With each Hyper-V monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Virtual switches
  • Virtual network adapters
  • Legacy network adapters
  • Virtual IDE controllers
  • Virtual storage devices
  • VMs

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Microsoft SQL server monitoring

Each Microsoft SQL server monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Microsoft SQL server monitor?

With each Microsoft SQL server monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Databases
  • Configurations
  • Users

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Windows server backup monitoring

Each Microsoft SQL server insight monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Microsoft SQL server insight monitor?

With each Microsoft SQL server insight monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Configurations
  • Users

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Docker monitoring

Each Docker monitor consumes one basic monitor license.

What can you monitor with each Docker monitor?

With each Docker monitor, you can monitor up to 25 images. If you need to monitor more images, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 images.

BizTalk server monitoring

Each BizTalk server insight monitor consumes one advanced monitor license.

What can you monitor with each BizTalk server monitor?

With each BizTalk server monitor, you can monitor up to 25 instances of each of these following child monitors:

  • Hosts
  • Receiving locations
  • Receiving ports
  • Sending ports
  • Orchestrations
  • General message boxes
  • Host message boxes
  • Host instances

If you need to add more child monitors, a basic monitor license allows you to monitor an extra 25 child monitors distributed across categories.

Hadoop server monitoring

Each Hadoop cluster monitor consumes one basic monitor license, and each node in the cluster consumes one basic monitor license.

ZooKeeper monitoring

Each ZooKeeper monitor consumes one basic monitor license.

SMART Disk monitoring

Each SMART Disk monitor consumes one basic monitor license.

StatsD metrics monitoring

For every host monitor, you can visualize and analyze 500 StatsD metrics. To monitor and get alerts, one basic monitor license is consumed for every 25 StatsD metrics.

Cron job monitoring

Every 25 cron jobs monitored consumes one basic monitor license.

Heartbeat endpoints monitoring

Every 25 Heartbeat URL endpoints monitored consumes one basic monitor license.

Hourly billing of VMs

For auto-scaling environments, where a VM instance will be active for short spans of time, the hourly billing licensing model will be beneficial. Enable hourly pricing to collect the metrics of the VMs even if there aren't any basic monitor licenses available. Bill will be calculated on the basis of 0.006$ per hour of VM activity.
